When Your Gut Is Struggling, Your Whole System May Be Listening

Acupuncture for Gut brain immune health

A message from Dr. Nancy Luan, PhD, OMD, LAc

I often tell my patients that the gut is not an isolated organ. It is part of one of the body’s most sophisticated communication networks. When digestive function changes, I want to understand what the nervous, immune, metabolic, and regulatory systems may be communicating as well.

Your digestive system communicates continuously with your brain, autonomic nervous system, immune system, hormones, and metabolism through the gut–brain–immune axis. When this communication becomes dysregulated, digestive symptoms can exist alongside changes in stress response, sleep, energy, inflammation, mood, appetite, and other physiological functions.

Why We Look Beyond the Digestive Symptom

At Apex Health & Wellness Center, we do not simply ask, “What is your stomach doing?” We ask, “What is happening throughout the system that may be influencing your digestive function?”

Our Advanced Clinical Acupuncture and neuromodulatory approach is designed to support neural and autonomic regulation and the communication pathways involved in gut function. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of 29 randomized controlled trials involving 5,100 participants found that acupuncture may improve gastrointestinal symptoms in functional gastrointestinal disorders; the authors also emphasized methodological limitations and overall evidence certainty ranging from very low to moderate. A newer 2026 systematic review of 23 randomized trials involving 2,454 participants found moderate- to high-certainty evidence that acupuncture probably improves symptoms and quality of life in functional dyspepsia compared with sham acupuncture.

What Modern Research Is Showing

Modern gastroenterology and neuroscience increasingly recognize bidirectional gut–brain and neuroimmune communication. Research describes interactions among the enteric nervous system, microbiome, immune system, and brain–gut pathways- helping explain why digestive function cannot always be separated from nervous-system and immune regulation.

Brain-imaging research provides another layer of evidence. A 2024 systematic review of 10 randomized fMRI studies examined acupuncture in functional gastrointestinal disorders and reported changes in brain activity and connectivity involving regions associated with visceral sensation, pain, and emotional regulation; the authors also called for higher-quality research.

This is the science behind our clinical philosophy: the goal is not simply to treat the location of a symptom, but to understand the communication systems regulating it.

Our clinical approach may also incorporate individualized Chinese herbal medicine and functional nutrition when appropriate. We use these therapies as individualized components of care rather than as substitutes for appropriate medical evaluation or treatment. Research continues to investigate how traditional Chinese medicine may interact with inflammatory, immune, neuroendocrine, and microbiome-related pathways, but the clinical evidence varies by condition and formulation.

One System. Many Connections.

This is why a patient may come to us with chronic bloating, reflux, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, or difficult digestion—and also notice concerns involving sleep, energy, stress, inflammation, mood, metabolism, or overall resilience.

Our goal is not to promise a quick fix or treat every symptom as a separate problem. We look for the interconnected physiological patterns and develop a personalized clinical strategy designed to support healthier regulation throughout the body.

With more than 20 years of clinical experience, I have cared for thousands of patients with digestive and other complex health concerns. That experience informs my individualized, systems-based approach- but every patient is different, and no treatment can guarantee a particular outcome.

If chronic digestive symptoms keep returning, it may be time to look beyond the gut and understand the larger system.

Your gut is communicating with your entire body. My role is to listen to that communication, understand the patterns, and develop a thoughtful clinical strategy to support healthier regulation!
